DIY Ideas for Repurposing Your Old Clothes
Repurposing clothes is a great way to get more use out of your wardrobe and find creative ways to express yourself. Whatever you choose to do with your old clothes, you mustn’t just throw them away! But, if you want to stay looking stylish, you need to reuse your old and unused clothes for something new. Moreover, repurposing clothing can save you money and save the planet. In this blog post, we have compiled some different DIY ideas that you can use to repurpose your old clothes. These projects will help you save money on new clothes and give you the chance to be more creative with what you already own!
Cut Your Old Jeans and Turn Them into Skirts and Shorts
If you want to repurpose your old clothes and only take a few minutes, this idea is for you! If you need some new skirts or shorts, then this DIY idea is perfect. First, measure the length of jeans you want by placing them on the floor with one leg flat. Mark where it meets the other side at full size, then cut. Another way to do this is by folding the jeans in half with the waistband at your hips and marking where you want them to fall on your leg. It works best if you are using an old pair of skinny jeans for this project!
Make a Dress Out of an Old Skirt and Some Fabric Scraps
Little did we know that we could create a new dress out of an old skirt. Wouldn’t it be nice to find new ways to reuse old clothes? For this DIY, you will need a skirt that fits well and some scrap fabric. You can use any scrap material, but lighter colors are recommended because dark colors tend to show through more when they’re sewn together. First, turn your skirt inside out and lay it out on a flat surface. Mark the waistline and hem of your dress using chalk or fabric marker, then cut them both off as straight as possible.
Layer two pieces of scrap fabric (one for each half) with right sides together and fold it at the waistband to create a clean finish along the edges if needed. Sew around three out of four sides, leaving one side open to insert your skirt. Sew up the last opening once you flip it inside out and fill it with the old skirt pieces. Be sure to use a zigzag stitch along both edges of this seam for added durability!
Create a DIY Tote Bag Out of an Old Dress
This idea is perfect because it’ll make your dress into a tote bag that you can use for anything! This DIY will take you about ten minutes, and the materials required are an old dress, fabric sewing scissors/scrap, measuring tape, and needle and thread. First, measure out how much material you need around the waist of your dress to make the top of your bag. Create a layout on a flat surface with the wrong side up and cut as straight as possible (this excess material will become part of the strap).
Next, pin down two opposite ends along one another right sides together. Sew them together using a half-inch seam allowance and leave an opening for turning it inside out later. After that, turn the piece inside out using a pencil or chopstick. Use it to push out all of your corners and topstitch around half-inch away from the edge for added durability.
Now you can use this bag as an accessory to go with any outfit you just made with the other ideas! You can bring along some makeup when going out on the town or even pack some snacks for a picnic in the park. What are some ways you’ve repurposed old clothes to make new ones?
